What is the overview of the match?

Yesterday, 19th April 2024, Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants were scheduled to play the 34th match of the IPL 2024. The venue of the match was  Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow and the match started at 7:30 PM.

Who won the toss?

The LSG won the toss and opted to bowl against Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team.

“We’ll bowl first. Looks like a good wicket, dew hasn’t been a big factor. Hopefully, it stays good for 40 overs. We would like to know what we are chasing. There weren’t any blunders we made. Last game against KKR was a big defeat,” Rahul said at the toss.

What happened on the ground?

The match was literally one-sided. LSG bowlers left no scope for the CSK batters. CSK batters surrendered.

KL Rahul won the toss on behalf of LSG and decided to do the fielding first. CSK showed their trust in the new opening pair of Ajinkya Rahane and Rachin Ravindra. However, Rachin failed to keep up the trust at least in this match. He got a golden duck.

LSG hardly ever allowed CSK to get any kind of partnership going with Ajinkya Rahane‘s 36 off 24 and Moeen Ali’s 30 off 20 being CSK’s best scores outside of what Jadeja and Dhoni could do.

After the dismissal of Moeen Ali, MS Dhoni walked in during the 18th over & scored a 9-ball 28-run innings to power his team score of 176/6 after 20 overs.

Ravindra Jadeja scored 57* in 40 balls (with five fours and a six) and this combined effort helped CSK to touch the mark of 176.

Now if we talk about the LSG, LSG went to the pitch with a target of 177 in 20 overs.  Lucknow Super Giants openers Rahul scored 82 runs and De Kock scored 54 runs. They batted with authority during their match-winning alliance of 134 and it is the highest partnership for any wicket at the Ekana Stadium. Rahul’s score consisted of nine fours and three sixes in his 53 balls while Quinton de Kock hit five fours and a six in his 43-ball knock. KL Rahul was out with only 16 runs needed while De Kock was dismissed in the 15th over.

Post-match reaction:

It is a huge win for the LSG. KL Rahul didn’t forget to praise his team.

“160-165 would have been ideal but yeah again it’s MSD (smiles). He walks in and the pressure gets to the bowlers. That’s the presence and intimidation he has had over teams and bowlers. We have a young team and I think it was the first time they were put under pressure by a huge figure like MS. Crowd was really really loud. But I still thought they stuck to their plans. He is a phenomenal player to still hit them for sixes. Yeah, 15-20 runs extra but we knew if we bat well we can chase it down,” Rahul said at the post-match presentation following LSG’s win over CSK.

“Feels good at the end of the day, When you win, looks like you make all the decisions right. “Impossible to get all right. Depends on the kind of wicket we are playing on and the kind of batters there are. We spend time doing homework on tactics and strategy and we spoke about them not settling against one style of bowling,” said Player of the Match Rahul.

“Felt that if we bat well, we could chase it down. I have been trying to assess the situation and today it came off. With Chennai’s spinners, they tried to put brakes on us. We tried to get to a good start. Tried to take them down, but luckily they came off. When your partnership goes on, you can take a few more chances. Glad that it happened,” Captain Rahul concluded.

An emotional point of the match:

It is no secret that even the senior players also respect MS Dhoni a lot and in yesterday’s match we saw the level again. During the Lucknow Super Giants vs Chennai Super Kings IPL 2024 match at the Ekana Stadium, it was KL Rahul’s gesture for Dhoni. After LSG beat CSK by 8 wickets in a superb all-round show, the players of both sides lined up to shake hands & LSG captain took his cap off – treated as a mark of respect – before shaking Dhoni’s hands. Videos captured Rahul taking his cap off when he approached Dhoni, who was lined up after Gaikwad.

Well, this is the beauty of cricket & respect.
