What is the overview of the match?

Yesterday was the 47th match of the IPL 2024. Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals locked horns in the match. The venue of the match was Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It is the home ground of KKR and KKR has a history of winning 50 matches out of the 86 matches they have played at this venue. The match started at 7:30 PM.

Who won the toss and decided to do what?

Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and chose to bat against Kolkata Knight Riders. Defending his decision Pant stated that, this would help them to post a high target against KKR.

What was the result of the match?

Delhi went to bat first and posted a target of 153/9 in 20 overs. KKR went to bat second and reached 157/3 in 16.3 overs.

How did the teams play?

Well, Delhi went to bat first & posted a target of 153/9 in 20 overs only. So, it can be stated Delhi failed to show any fight and it was an almost one-sided show of KKR bowlers.

DC opener Prithvi Shaw scored only 13 runs. Vaibhav Arora took his wicket. After Prithvi, Jake Frase-McGurk went to the pavilion after just making 12 runs. Mitchell Starc took his wicket. Apart from the world-class bowling of Mitchell Starc, here we saw an exceptional catch from Venkatesh Iyer.

Shai Hope lost his wicket after just making 6 runs and Arora bagged his 2nd wicket here. Abhishek Porel also failed to build his print on the pitch and fell for Harshit Rana. He fell for 18 off 15 balls.

However, the star of the match was Varun Chakravarthy. He took 3 wickets. Well, this is not all, he took high-voltage wickets such as Rishabh Pant (27), Tristan Stubbs (4), and Kumar Kushagra (1). Sunil Narine took the wicket of Axar Patel (15).

Harshit Rana took 1 more wickets. Harshit took the wicket of Rashikh Salaam (1).  Kuldeep Yadav (35*) and Lizaad Williams (1*) remained unbeaten in the match and DC ended the show at 153/9 in 20 overs. Well, this is not something that could be called a good target.

On the other hand, KKR went to the pitch with a target of 154 and the trusted shoulders of KKR made a good show. Shreyas Iyer scored 33* runs, Venkatesh Iyer scored 26*, and Phil Salt scored a quick half-century. He made the half-century before the out of Sunil Narine. Axar Patel took the wicket of Narine right after Salt’s half-century. However, by then KKR bagged 79 runs already. Axar also took the wicket of Salt at 68 and Lizaad took the wicket of Rinku Singh at 11. With this combined effort KKR reached 157/3 in just 16.3 overs.

It was quite a comfortable 7 wicket win for KKR.

Another highlight of the match:

In yesterday’s match, Iyer made a record which is another highlight of the match. Shreyas Iyer scored 33* runs in the match. However, with this run, he touched the mark of 3000 IPL runs. For KKR, Iyer has played 23 matches, in which he has scored 652 runs at an average of 34.52 and a strike rate of 135.55, with four half-centuries. His best score is 85.

This season has been a decent one for the KKR skipper with the bat. He has scored 251 runs at an average of 41.83, with a strike rate of 137.16. His best score is 50, which is his solitary half-century.

Post-match reaction: who said what?

It was a very comfortable & good win for KKR and captain Iyer was thankful for the pitch. Yes, Iyer stated this in the post-match conversation.

“(On if he thought the pitch will play this way) Not at all, considering the last few matches. After the powerplay, the ball started spinning a bit, was helping the spinners and was helping the spinners and was tacky. Happy that we bowled first, we got an idea on how it was playing,” Iyer said.

Captain didn’t forget to praise Varun for his bashing performance. Iyer said “He (Chakravarthy) was not at his best in the last few games. But today, coming in and delivering under pressure, that is what we demand. The way he turned up today was simply brilliant. We have been thinking about it (qualification) from match one, that has been our mindset. Just focussing on our work ethics and our performance.”
