What is the overview of the match?

Yesterday, Gujarat Titans & Punjab Kings were scheduled to play the 37th match of the IPL 2024. The venue of the match was Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur and the match started at 7:30 PM.

About the toss:

Punjab Kings had won the toss and opted to bat against Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans.

What happened on the ground?

It was a good start for the Punjab Kings as they chose to bat first and the trusted openers Sam Curran and Prabhsimran Singh put up an opening stand of 52 runs. However, the good time didn’t last for the team because the spinners of Gujarat made it difficult for them. The Afghan pairing of Noor Ahmad and Rashid Khan first derailed them after the powerplay after which Sai Kishore took over. The Indian spinner ended up with figures of 4/33 as Punjab Kings were all out for a score of 142 in 20 overs.

Titans eventually recorded a comfortable win in 19.1 overs courtesy of a pressure-releasing cameo from Rahul Tewatia (36 not out off 16). It was Gujarat Titans’ fourth win in eight games while Punjab Kings suffered their sixth loss in eight matches. Shubman Gill (35 off 29) got tough runs at the top of the order before falling to a mistimed aerial hit off Livingstone. Sai Sudharsan (31 off 33) also found stroke-making hard while the dangerous David Miller was Livingstone’s second victim. Punjab Kings were able to apply the pressure in the middle overs but Tewatia defused their threat with a timely onslaught comprising six boundaries.

Point table scenario:

It is the fourth win for Gujarat Titans, and they are holding the 6th position on the point table. GT has won 4 matches and lost 4 among the 8 matches they have played till now. GT has an NRR (Net Run Rate) of -1.055. GT has 8 points till now.

On the other hand, Punjab Kings is holding the 9th position in the pint table which is the second bottom position. They have played 8 matches till now, have won only 2, and have lost 4. Punjab Kings have an NRR of -0.292 and have 4 points.

Post-match reaction:

This win has worked as fuel for GT. In the post-match presentation, it reflected on the captain’s face. “Would have liked to finish it a bit early, but good to get those two points. (Captaincy) It’s been very exciting for me to be able to take up this role. Except for the over-rate, everything has been good,” Gill said.

The Gujarat captain also spoke about a small altercation that he had with Liam Livingstone earlier in the match. Gill said, “When I am out there batting, I just want to play as a batter. I don’t want to think too much about the captaincy. He was trying to rush me there, but the ball that I got out, I would have made that decision even if I was batting as a batsman or even without that little bit that we had,”

Shubman Gill made 35 runs off 29 balls with a strike rate of 120.69. He was the second-highest scorer of the match for GT. However, Rahul Tewatia’s brisk 36 off 18 balls saw Gujarat home. Gill has scored 298 runs in eight innings with an average of 42.57. His strike rate stands at 146.79, while his best so far is the unbeaten 89 in the first match against Punjab. However, his efforts went in vain and PBKS won by three wickets.

In this context, it is important to mention that after yesterday’s score, Shubman has entered into the list of the highest runs of the IPL 2024. Shubman Gill is in the 4th position with 298 runs while veteran Indian batter Virat is still topping the list with 379 runs.
